On a recent trip to Alaska, my wife Cathi and I had the pleasure of seeing Holgate Glacier up close. It was a life-altering experience and an inspiration in much of my work. Holgate Glacier in Alaska, like other glaciers around the world, are disappearing at an alarming rate and will soon be gone if we don’t realize that we are not alone. To me, the glass in the center of this piece captures the color and feeling that I experienced that day as we cruised by the glacier. With Humpback whales and sea lions swimming all around us, I was reminded that we are Not Alone.

Conservation of nature and wildlife has been important to me for as long as I can remember. Dermal Armor reminds me of the skin of an elephant or rhinoceros, magnificent animals that are being hunted to extinction. The rhinoceros population in India has been so decimated that, in a bold attempt to decrease the poaching, rhinoceros poachers are shot on site, no warning shot and no arrest, just shot on site. Both elephants and rhinoceros have dermal armor but it isn’t bullet proof. My piece Dermal Armor is my way of telling the rhinoceros and elephants that they are Not Alone.

When Red Runs Dry
I feel at ease in and around water. I am saddened by what is happening to our rivers and streams whether it’s man-made or natural. This piece is inspired by Red River of the South, a tributary of the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers. Everything that we do affects the balance of the ecosystems and if we forget that, we will soon deplete our natural resources like the water in the Red River of the South. We are Not Alone in the need for water for our survival.

I love being in the water. It’s peaceful and silences the world for me. Water is a recurring theme for my work and I’m drawn to the colors and feel of the beach or the flow of a river and the glassiness of a calm lake at sunset. I’ve spent my life around the ocean, lakes, and rivers, and water is where I feel my best. Walking along a beach without a soul in sight I’m Not Alone. I feel the enormity of the ocean. I remember my vacations as a kid and I cast my mind to the future.
The ocean levels are rising, coral is dying, fish and other ocean creatures are being harvested at an alarming rate, and all while we continue to dump garbage and toxic chemicals into the world’s oceans, lakes, and rivers. We over-fish without regard to the consequences and fail to realize that we are Not Alone.
